Applications 3D

What needs Recreation?

Kettering University has an important sculpture at the hub of its campus. This sculpture is the Orbits of Issac. This sculpture is fairly large standing at over 10’x10’x10′. They called us, Applications 3D, to have the Orbits of Issac reverse-engineered. To reverse engineer the Orbits of Issac a 3D scan is necessary first. To scan such a large structure outdoors we used our Surphaser scanner. Furthermore, this scanner has a range of up to 70 meters and is very accurate. This makes the Surphaser the perfect scanner to use for such a job. An accurate scan was completed quickly thanks to it being able to capture 1.2 million points per second. With the scanning now complete reverse engineering can now begin.

Orbits of Issac Reverse Engineered

The Orbits of Issac is a complex sculpture made up of various geometries. Due to its complexity, numerous CAD parts had to be created. These CAD parts would then be joined together in a single assembly file. The final model was then sent over to Kettering University. They downsized the model to be able to create much smaller 3D-printed replicas.
